Overview

Skateboard: Hit & Run is a 3D platformer about skating through a rural city causing destruction and mayhem. I worked on this as a UI and Game Designer to make an enjoyable game demo to end off my college experience.

Design Goals

My goal as a UI/UX Designer was to make a connection between the player and the game for an enjoyable experience. I aimed to have the UI fun to look at and easy to interact with while keeping a consistent style to catch a player's interest.

Combo UI

I designed the combo meter as a clear indicator of the multiple elements that take part in building a combo in the game. The Timer starts as soon as the first move is performed, when it is empty the multiplier is applied to the points accumulated during the whole combo. The meter builds as moves are performed, when it fills up all the way, the multiplier goes up by one and the timer resets. When reset, the next time it drains it builds up speed, making it hard to keep a combo going as it gets bigger.

Pause Menu

For the pause menu I wanted to give it a nice, soothing feel to it where the player can have a moment to rest when they stop the gameplay. I further reinforced this idea by having the flavor text at the top pulsate to make it have a chill look and feel. The pause menu in the final game works as a hub for customizing the character in game.

Breakable Objects

A major fun factor for Skateboard Hit & Run was the inclusion of breakable objects. They were implemented to make the world more interactable and fun for the player as they skate around the city. I helped bring the idea from imagination to in game by working step by step through code and design how to get it in and make it feel right.
